Hayden was yet another early experiment of Nitrus Brio's back in the early days of evolution experimentation. Dr Cortex ordered Nitrus Brio to evolve a hyena, because he predicted that it would turn out to be a 'mindless, psychotic beast' perfect for world domination.
But Hayden didn't turn out to be that way, possibly due to the fact that it is the female hyena who is more aggressive than the male. Something Neo overlooked. Hayden was also still young & had a playful and carefree nature, although he laughed sometimes without reason and was a bit skittish around scary mutants such as Koala Kong.
Nevertheless, Cortex considered him a complete failure and tossed him aside with other early 'failed' experiments. Ones who were too young to be useful at the time.
Hayden spent time growing up with Crunch, Pinstripe, Kris roo and a few other anthros. He was a bit unusual looking compared with other anthros, due to his arched back, but this was due to the fact that he could still run on all fours like a quadruped hyena can. He liked to run around the castle after other young mutants in play, he appeared a bit more feral on the outside.
While he always thought of himself as a 'failure' (thanks to Cortex), his potential is revealed once he sees that he has an eye for mechanics Thus, he becomes a mutant mechanic around the Castle in those early days, helping Brio with making and fixing hardware. Hayden certainly wasn't stupid at all, like Neo Cortex thought he was.
He remained a good friend to both Kris roo and Crunch in their youth.
But a few years later after Dr Cortex had vanished, Dr Nitrus Brio set him and other experiments free to live outside of Cortex Castle Island. He found a home on N.Sanity island, and got a job on Ernest Emu's brand new farm he had started up. He was a natural around the farmyard, and his skills and strength came into good use for the frail farmer Ernest. A strange opossum girl also joined in the job sometime afterwards.
There Hayden spent several years before he would meet up with one of his childhood bandicoot friends once more...
