Koala Kong was one of Cortex's early 'successful' mutants created to be more brawn than anything else. Dosing him with a load of steroids soon after evolution, Kong became a very aggressive and dangerous mutant. He was easily the strongest mutant of his time. Kong was also easy to manipulate with the Cortex Vortex, thanks to his low IQ.
He didn't get along well with any of the other minions because of his roid rage, so he was sent away from Cortex Castle to work in the mines of X.Treme Island, leading an expedition there to mine for treasures such as gems. But just a few years later when Crash Bandicoot encounters and defeats him, he begins to calm down.
Now that he doesn't get forced to take steroids and work for Dr Cortex, he loosens up and lives on X.Treme Island permanently at the beach. For better or worse, he becomes a peaceful pothead, leading some anthros to start referring to him as 'Koala Bong'. He also becomes a friend of the Komodo Brothers who set up a racetrack on the beach nearby his shack.
